Graduate Community Initiative Working Group Meeting Minutes April 1, 2008

Attendees: Joe Burke, Kris Corda, Edna Dugan (via phone), Anne Lukingbeal, Susan Murphy, Brendan O’Brien, Sunny Power, Rebecca Sparrow, Brenda Wickes, Donna Wilczynski and Yu Yu

The primary focus on the meeting was to review the updated subcommittee reports. Brenda Wickes presented the Graduate/Professional Student Life and Programming Subcommittee and Housing reports and Rebecca Sparrow presented the Career Services Subcommittee report. The Communication Subcommittee report has not been completed.

During the Housing Subcommittee report presentation, Vice President Susan Murphy shared that she is bringing together the Real Estate and Campus Life representatives so they are on the same page (with the Law School) regarding the transition of Hughes Hall from housing to offices over the next several years.

Also during the Housing discussion, Anne Lukingbeal, Associate Dean and Dean of Students at the Law School, stated that many law school students live on campus for one year and asked that those students be considered in housing issues going forward.

During the discussion related to the Graduate Student Center, Susan stated that the Center is on the Campus Master Plan. In the meantime, she and Sunny Power will speak with Provost Martin about the Center. They will work to define a short-term, medium-term and long-term plan.

The group agreed to meet one more time before the end of the semester to review updated reports. The GPSA will identify new members for the Working Group for the 2008–2009 academic year.
