Response RE: Resolution 52
Dear Ulysses-
David Delchamps, chair of our Educational Policy Committee, asked me to share with you (and others) the status of EPC’s consideration of SA Resolution 52:
“What the EPC does with SA Resolution 52 will depend on exactly how we decide to schedule final due dates for take-home finals and end-of-term exercises in place of or in lieu of final exams --- that’s still wide open. What EPC did decide at its 5 March 2014 meeting:
1. Whatever revisions we make to the Faculty Handbook won’t make any allusions to percentage of grade as does SA Resolution 52.
2. We won’t move the text away from the final-exams part of the Handbook so it applies to all exams. We will, however, put wording in the prelims section similar to the 3-in-24 wording in the final-exam part.”
By the way, in addition the committee suggests that it’s inefficient for the SA to draft language for the Faculty Handbook, because the EPC will be drafting its own. David recommends that SA resolutions should lay out the arguments for changing the rules and what the students would think the new rules should cover. Too often, the EPC finds that the SA statements are too specific (cf. point 1 above), which might require frequent re-writing of the handbook.
Best wishes, Joe
