SA: Resolution 6: Engaging Unelected Community Members Through Associate Membership

Sponsored by: Cameron Pritchett ‘15, Don Muir ‘15, Geoffrey Block ‘14

Whereas, the Student Assembly has long struggled to effectively engage unelected community members

Whereas, the Student Assembly must take effective measures to represent all undergraduate students and communities on campus

Whereas, giving community members a seat at the table will allow them to truly contribute to the SA’s legislative process

Whereas, an associate membership position will help engage communities who may be adverse to running in public elections

Whereas, an associate membership position allows those who lose elections to still remain engaged with the Student Assembly

Be it therefore resolved, that the SA support the views and initiatives presented in the Associate Membership report

Be it further resolved, that the 2012–2013 Standing Rules be amended with the following being added as Section I Rule 9:

The Student Assembly is empowered to select two ex-officio members, hereafter referred to as Associate Members, to be seated at the table during the Student Assembly’s regularly scheduled meetings. These Associate Members will have debating, but not voting, privileges.

Respectfully Submitted,
