S.A. Resolution #27: Commemoration of Transgender Day of Remembrance
Sponsored by: Nate Treffeisen ‘12
Whereas, the Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice, and
Whereas, over the last decade, more than one person per month has died due to transgender-based hate or prejudice, regardless of any other factors in their lives, and
Whereas, a day to specifically remember murder and other violence based on real or perceived gender identity will help raise public awareness of the shockingly high rate of violence against those who live outside traditional norms of gender identity, and
Whereas, The news media, while increasing coverage of hate crimes over the past decade, has seldom focused on the high incidence and intense brutality of violence against the transgender community, and
Whereas, November 20, 2011 marks the Thirteenth annual Transgender Day of Remembrance,
Be it therefore resolved, that the Student Assembly hereby recognizes November 20, 2011 to be Transgender Day of Remembrance at Cornell University, and
Be it further resolved, that the Student Assembly remembers and honors the lives of those who were victims of violence based on bias against transgender people, and
Be it further resolved, that the Student Assembly affirms its full support for the further expansion of transgendered peoples’ rights in America and at Cornell, and honors the efforts of transgendered people to secure protections from violence under the law.
