R.38 Housing Lottery Recommendations - Part 2: Policies

Status/Result:

Whereas, students have expressed deep concern about the housing lottery process

Whereas, rising sophomores are guaranteed on-campus housing if they choose to enter the lottery

Whereas, there are currently not enough beds on-campus for each Cornell student

Whereas, currently, timeslots are given in order of seniority, by graduating class

Whereas, currently, Campus Life allocates a certain number of beds to be distributed during the continuing occupancy lottery process

Whereas, currently, students not intending to select a roommate during the lottery process can select an empty double room

Be it therefore resolved, that the Student Assembly recommends that

• 1. The housing lottery be configured so that rising sophomores, who are guaranteed housing, select on the first set of time slots available, followed by rising juniors, followed by rising seniors
• 2. Campus Life reduce the number of beds available through the in-house lottery system by 50%
• 3. Campus Life and the Residential and Community Life Committee work together in the upcoming academic year to explore ways to ensure that students desiring to block together with other students have ample opportunity to do so.
