SA: R. 18 Resolution Regarding Vacancies on the '08-'09 Student Assembly

Originally Presented On:March 13, 2008
Sponsors:Steven Matthews ‘10 and Haley Bergman ‘10
Subject of Resolution:Vacancies on the ‘08-‘09 Student Assembly
Status/Result:-

Whereas, it is a grave disservice to the Student Assembly and the student body alike, for seats to go unfilled and constituencies to go unrepresented;

Whereas, the clause in the election rules “Failure to submit appropriate documentation of expenses by 12:30 p.m. on the last day of the election will result in automatic disqualification.” Could be interpreted as referring to receipts, and not a signed letter;

Whereas, the disqualification of uncontested contestants does nothing but disenfranchise voters and proves that’s the assembly fails to put the interests of undergraduate students at the forefront of its actions;

Whereas, disqualifying candidates helps no one and no thing, including the image of the Student Assembly;

Whereas, the disqualification of candidates was contentious, and was only affirmed by a vote of 4 to 3 by the elections committee;

Be it therefore resolved that this assembly overturn the action of the Elections Committee in disqualifying uncontested candidates;

Be it further resolved that, Steven Matthews ‘10 and Haley Bergman ‘10 be granted seats on the ‘08-‘09 Student Assembly as designated by student body votes.

Respectfully submitted,

Steven Matthews ‘10
CALS Representative, ‘07-‘08
