R. 30: Resolution Regarding the Presidents Climate Commitment
As discussed Thursday, 8 March 2007.
Whereas, the Student Assembly is a body of student elected representatives;
Whereas, the Presidents Climate Commitment (PCC) is a document outlining steps for campuses to become climate neutral;
Whereas, President Skorton has decided to sign the Presidents Climate Commitment;
Whereas, as an educational and research institution we have a responsibility to educate ourselves about climate neutrality and research better ways to make ourselves climate neutral;
Whereas, the signing of the PCC is Cornell University’s first commitment of funds and human resources towards making Cornell climate neutral;
Whereas, the commitments outlined in the PCC include: 1) The development of a comprehensive plan to achieve climate neutrality as soon as possible, 2) The development of institutional structures to guide this plan within two months, 3) The development of an action plan within two years, 4) The inclusion of climate neutrality and sustainability into the curriculum;
Be it therefore resolved that the Student Assembly commend President Skorton for his decision to sign the Presidents Climate Commitment;
Be it further resolved that the Student Assembly request representation for up to two Assembly members on the institutional structures that will guide this action plan;
Be it further resolved that the Student Assembly request that student input play a role in the formulation of a strategy for incorporating climate neutrality into the curriculum;
Be it finally resolved that a copy of this resolution be sent to all of the constituent Assemblies and President Skorton.
Respectfully submitted,
Kwame Thomison ‘07 President, Student Assembly
Neal Nisargand ‘07 Engineering Representative Chair, Student Assembly Environmental Committee
