Resolution 6 Resolution to amend the Charter regarding the procedure by which professional school GPSA members are elected. Approved April 21, 2003

Whereas the GPSA Standing Rules and Special Rules of Order, as adopted on April 22nd, 2002, contains the clause:

3.6. The professional schools shall select their GPSA representatives by what-ever means they choose. It is recommended that it be by election by students or their representatives.

Whereas this contradicts Section 4.4 of the GPSA charter; and

Whereas the different nature of the professional schools means that they are better served by having their own election procedure

Be it Therefore Resolved to alter Section 4.4 of the Charter as follows:

4.4 The voting members of the GPSA representing the divisions of the Graduate School will be elected in the spring, by and from the Council of Representatives, prior to the first week in May. Representatives nominate and vote by caucus for the voting GPSA member(s) who represents their division area/professional school, as described above (Article 4). All voting GPSA members are elected to a one-year term, with no limit on the number of terms they may serve. Voting GPSA seats are not transferable. If there is no candidate either elected or appointed pursuant to the above procedure for the seats representing the divisions of the Graduate School, that seat is thrown open as “at-large,” and a representative is elected by the Council of Representatives. The seat reverts to its original designation at the next regular election. The professional schools shall select their GPSA representatives by whatever means they choose.
