This next year, the President of the Student Assembly will be representing the student body to an entirely new slate of senior administrators. Although the SA has had issues with the current administration, I believe we can redefine this relationship. That begins with the election of a passionate executive. I intend to serve students all students, and as a fresh face to the SA, will lead with the following principles: Advocacy - I plan on meeting with students and organizations as often as possible. I believe your concerns deserve more than just an email. Engagement - For years, the SA has been largely unaccessible to students. Let’s make resolutions and meetings more accessible and develop an online presence for the SA. Consciousness - New students are currently run through workshops on sexual assault prevention and healthy relationships over the course of a few hours by outsiders. Developing a collaborative and extensive program, I believe current students can engage new students more effectively. Common Sense - As this coming year will be a by-line funding year, it will be crucial to understand where students’ money goes and how to use it effectively. UNITE WITH BATISTA: Centering a Cornell on Students. At it’s core, the Student Assembly President is the advocate for the student voice. We need to make students a priority again. Within the SA I have developed a referenda process, refocused sexual assault policy, advocated for expanded February Break services, co-chaired AIDS week, created quiet North Campus study spaces, and implemented United Student Body among other actions that impact campus life. Let’s create a system where every part of Cornell is benefitting the others. If re-elected to the SA, I will: BOLSTER student voice through a student bill of rights and free legal advising, BUILD a better late night transportation system and bias reporting system, BRIDGE communities through a central hub of student events and summerplaybook.com that allows us to meet up internationally when traveling and interning, BELIEVE in promoting diversity by providing the necessary structural support, and BUDGET equitably during a byline funded cycle. My name is Matt Stefanko and I want to be your next S.A. President. Student representation is broken. On large issues, representatives feel helpless, believing that the student voice is not heard by the administration. Under my leadership, I will push the S.A. to achieve results for undergraduates. Instead of advocating for innocuous improvements, we will focus on what matters: receiving a first-rate education at an affordable price, and having a good time while doing it. In my 3 years, we’ve already started to move the needle. I’ve successfully advocated for a student-run grocery store that will open next year. We’ve also clarified the SAFC guidelines to ensure all student organizations have equitable access to funding. In the next year, I hope to accomplish the following: 1. Establish a student-led task force to investigate the costs of higher education 2. Increase Big Red Shuttle funding for better late-night transportation 3. Secure subsidies for the student-run grocery store 4. Ensure the successful launch of ECO, a student-led environmental council 5. Actively hold representatives accountable I’m fighting for you.
