EA E-News - October 2010

Vol. 2 No. 1 A quarterly e-newsletter from Cornell University’s Employee Assembly

Hello from the Employee! We hope you’ll take this opportunity to take a quick glance at news from members of the Employee Assembly as well as campus information and events targeted to CU staff. Feedback and ideas are always welcome at ea@assembly.cornell.edu.

  • The Employee Assembly was pleased to welcome new members this past spring. Meet all your representative members in this CornellCast Staff Notes video. We invite any staff members who are interested to attend our meetings. There is an open forum section held every meeting to hear your ideas, concerns, questions. You can also asked to put on the meeting agenda. We’re here to help you!
  • Mark your calendars for Fall Employee Celebration Day to be held October 16 in Barton Hall. Not only will Employee Assembly representatives be there (look for our table) but you’ll also enjoy a good food, the Cornell marching band, children’s activities, and your choice of a Cornell athletic event! More info to follow in Paw Print.
  • Nominations are currently being accepted for the EA’s George Peter Award, given to Cornell staff members who are great at their job, extend themselves to help others, and go “above and beyond” on a daily basis. Details at <http://assembly.cornell.edu/EA-GeorgePeter/Home>.
  • KUDOS! We received the following Staff Kudos from Mina Amundsen, University Planner. Send your Staff Kudos in for publication in the next EA News. The Kudos giver and receiver will be invited to an Employee Assembly Staff Kudos luncheon at the end of the academic year. So recognize your colleagues by sending in your Staff Kudos to to ea-staffrecognition@assembly.cornell.edu.
    • “I’d like to send kudos to Frank Popowitch from Mina Amundsen and his colleagues in the Campus Planning Office for completing his Master’s in Professional Studies in Environmental Information Science, in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences. Frank completed his advanced degree through the Employee Degree Program. Frank has worked extremely hard for two years to complete his coursework and thesis, while continuing his professional work for Cornell at the same time, and effectively bringing together his research and work interest in his final project. Frank is the GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and data manager for the Campus Planning Office and one of the many things that he does in addition to helping us with planning, are the campus maps.”
  • Interested in being involved with the Employee Assembly? Join one of our committees! We are looking for members for all our committees: internal operations, elections, communications, education, personnel policy, finance, and staff recognition and awards. For information on joining a committee visit the committee webpage or contact Kathryn Coldren at kec24@cornell.edu.
  • Hear what President Skorton has to say about staff concerns and issues. The President’s Address to the Staff will be held Friday, November 12 at noon in the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts.
  • There are several places to find educational resources for staff members both on and off the Cornell campus. This list, while not exhaustive, is where employees can upgrade their skills, or pursue a degree or at least begin their search.
