University Hearing and Review Board Appointment Process

The committee reviewed the online questionnaire that each candidate must review. Faculty applicants are handled by the Faculty Senate rather than the Codes and Judicial Committee.

T. van Haaren asked what has been looked for in the past?

K. Zoner said personal integrity, ability to look at facts objectively were important. If the person had an answer they could not explain in the interviews then that would be a red flag, and lead to closer scrutiny. Some candidates are usually rejected each semester.

E. Magruder said these people should be looked at as the “juries” of the judicial system.

J. Cetta moved to set deadlines. He proposed setting the deadline a month from Monday, March 15.

R. Lieberwitz suggested employees could get release time or comp time for participation in hearing and review boards.

K. Zoner said she would discuss with Mary Opperman, Vice President of Human Resources.

R. Lieberwitz said there seems to be a tension between goal of filling positions in the boards and selectivity sought in questions and screening process. Where does the emphasis lie?

K. Zoner said screening out potentially biased candidates is the main goal.

The committee adopted the following timeline:

Applications due on Monday, April 5.

Interviews conducted between April 5…23.

  • Kathy, Gary, and Kevin will identify times they are available to conduct interviews, and email to <cjc-members@assembly.cornell.edu> by Tuesday, March 16.
  • OA will list these times in online application for candidates to specify what times work for them.

CJC Meeting to finalize recommendation on April 23.

Recommendation ready for Wednesday, April 28.
